Inhibited or Delayed Ejaculation

Delayed ejaculation is a form of sexual dysfunction affecting a man’s ability to reach an orgasm. The causes of delayed ejaculation vary, and most men will experience some form of delayed or inhibited ejaculation throughout their life.

When it takes you longer than 30 minutes to reach orgasm, or you cannot ejaculate with a partner, that is a good time to seek help from a sex therapist.

Prior to seeking help from a sex therapist, it is recommended you rule out any underlying medical causes for your inhibited or delayed ejaculation. I can provide referrals to area doctors who specialize in treating delayed or inhibited ejaculation.

Primary cases of delayed ejaculation may not always be straightforward to treat, which is why it is important to seek the care of a specialist in this area. This condition often requires the help of professional psychotherapists; together, we can make a plan on how to best treat your delayed or inhibited ejaculation.

What Can Cause Delayed Ejaculation?

It’s important to remember that the average time it takes for ejaculation to occur upon stimulation varies between individuals, so there is no published baseline of “normal.” However, in the case of delayed ejaculation, most causes are psychological. But, the psychological causes vary, so there is no “normal” cause for this condition; there are many reasons why a man cannot ejaculate.

Currently, there are no medications available for psychological causes of delayed ejaculation or lack of ejaculation, which is why sex therapy is a recommended treatment strategy.

Sex therapy can help you understand the reasons and causes when sustained difficulty ejaculating occurs.

Therapy Can Help You Overcome Delayed Ejaculation

Delayed ejaculation may have a psychological cause if it only happens in specific situations. For example, it’s more likely delayed ejaculation has a psychological basis if a man is able to ejaculate normally when masturbating, but experiences a delay or anorgasmia (lack of orgasm) during sex with a partner.

Some psychological factors that may underlie delayed ejaculation include:

  • Stress

  • Unexpressed anger

  • Difficulty with pleasure

  • Religious or spiritual beliefs

  • Issues of lost confidence or performance anxiety

  • Many other causes not listed

There are many causes of delayed ejaculation, and sex therapy is a way to treat this condition.

Sex therapists recognize there is no single intervention that works for all patients. They're also aware that the key to successful treatment will be to identify the source of the problem and to use appropriate, thoughtful, targeted therapy to deal with the psychological factors that trigger or contribute to the problem.
